No Adobe Flash for Vista 64

Currently there's no support for Adobe's Flash plugin on the Vista 64 bit version of Explorer:

To use Flash Player to view Flash content on a 64-bit operating system, you must run a 32-bit browser. Bah.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year and all the best for 2008 for you and all your families.

Vista 64

I've been toying with the idea of upgrading my desktop machine from Vista 32 to Vista 64 for two reasons. Firstly I've got a 64bit dual core AMD processor and I want to use it! Secondly I want to be able to use all of the memory in the PC; it's got 4GB and whilst 2^32 is 4.1GB, by the time you take off the video memory and some other hardware reservations the useable memory is about 3.5GB.

So last night I took the plunge and installed from scratch. It gave me the opportunity to stripe the three disks that are in the box too. The Vista performance indicator was telling me that with a score of 5.0, the disk performance was my lowest score.

It took about 35 minutes to install Vista on top of the striped disks... and then another 45 minutes to upgrade that keyless installation with the same image to get around the limitation of only having a Vista upgrade disk. No problems to speak of so far as there are 64 bit drivers for all of my hardware but I'm not surprised to find this as for once I'd done my research before jumping in feet first.

There are drivers for my motherboard's RAID chipset, my Nvidia video cards, Creative Audigy sound card (that's about 3 years old), mouse, webcam, Garmin satnav and my Blackberry. The only thing that doesn't seem to be working is the installer for Sony Ericsson's PC Suite but to be honest I can live without that. I was only looking for the USB driver that I can get from somewhere else when and if I need it.

I've still got one unknown device showing in Device Manager but that is the Creative sound card's game port that I can happily live without.

Striping the disks has given me a performance boost. According to Vista I now have a performance score of 5.4 with the processor being the lowest score with everything else at 5.9 bar the gaming graphics score of 5.8. It isn't going to justify an upgrade to a quad core box despite the availablity of the new shiney AMD Phenom quad core chips!

Always ask before opening this file

I've got a shortcut to PuTTY in the quick launch area of my Windows Vista toolbar. It's always asking me if it's okay to open the file as it comes from what Microsoft would say is an 'untrusted source'. Untrusted could be said to be another word for 'unwilling to pay Microsoft' if I was being cynical.

Anyway I digress... There's a tick box with the sentence 'Always ask before opening this file' that doesn't work. I've put up with it for a while but decided to Google for an answer today and came up with this link:

Thanks Robert for working this barmy situation out:

..you must "Unblock" the application from it's original file location. By original file location I mean the location where you downloaded it to. If you move the file before unblocking, you will never be able to unblock the file unless you delete it and redownload the file. If the file you need to unblock came in a zip, you need to unblock the zip before extracting the contents.

It seems crazy but it works!

Drupal and theme updates

I've just updated the content management system and some of the modules that this site is based on to the latest version. I've also updated the theme to the latest version too so there may be some little niggles..

Flash Earth

Most people have been amazed by Google Earth, the web version at http://maps.google.co.uk/ and Microsoft's http://local.live.com/ but they all have different data sources.

I came across Flash Earth today that allows you to try different sources from the same browser window.

Have a look at the following link which is the centre of Hook. The warehouse on the left became housing about 18 months ago which you can see if you select one of the Microsoft options.

There's also quite a few new conservatories..

Blackberry 8820

I've been using a Blackberry 8820 for a couple of months to keep an eye on emails when I'm not near a computer. I'd like to think that I haven't become as addicted as some though.. I can see why the thing is nicknamed a Crackberry!

I was asked by Joel yesterday how I was getting on which made me think about what I thought.

It's great for email! It just works. Removing the 'sent from Blackberry' line on the bottom of every email made it better! It uses IMAP to poll my mailbox periodically.

It doesn't do html email. Paraphrasing from here, it's all very well being a text only email purist but the other 99% of the population don't care if an email is plain text or html, in fact I'd say they like having different fonts, colours and pictures available. I'm going to give BBSmart a trial over Christmas to see how I get on.

RIM (the people behind the Blackberry) send the emails for you which meant a little playing around with SPF and SRS settings for the domains that I'm sending email from.

I've got MidpSSH installed which gives me emergency SSH access if I really need it.

I've also got Opera Mini installed which is great but took a little while to get working due to Orange UK's lack of defining an APN on the device.

One thing that the two applications above highlight is that the Blackberry is a 2G/EDGE device. It's a lot slower than the 3G access from my regular mobile. But as a result of not having 3G the battery life is tremendous (as long as you leave the wireless network turned off when you aren't using it). The speed experience also stopped me thinking about one of the current iPhones.

Another thought is to pair the Blackberry to my 3G phone when I need that extra bit of speed. Something else to play with..

All in all the Blackberry is a decent well thought out product.

K850i and my Parrot

Since getting my new K850i I've been having to okay the request to sync my contacts each and every time the thing paired up with my Parrot car kit. The option to 'Allow Connection' wasn't available. Sony Ericsson released firmware R1CA037 at the start of December which fixed this bug but frustratingly it took Orange until yesterday to sanction the update via the Sony Ericsson Update Service. I installed it yesterday and it's working so I'm happy. The firmware update also had another go at fixing the sync between flash and camera issue that meant I sometimes got blank black photos when I took pictures in the dark. The previous firmware was meant to fix that but didn't for me.

I just saw an Ambwlans...

I just saw an Ambwlans driving along the A30 in Hook. I hope he wasn't lost... :)

I'm a Chartered Engineer!

My certificate from the Engineering Council arrived this morning and I'm now a CEng. Whoopee!

To get my CEng I had to first become a Chartered IT Professional (CITP) with the British Computer Society.
