All change at Nebuad

The CEO of Nebuad has resigned:

I'm wondering if it's the sign of bad news for Phorm who've had their own drama this week with BT being raided by the City of London's CID ahead of their reported forthcoming trial:

Whatever Phorm are saying though, their share price is dropping like a stone:

but they don't think it's a problem:

Targeted advertising is something that I wouldn't object to as long as I can opt out of having my data collected, I'm sure that the data is collected in a way that can't be linked back to me, it only effects the adverts that I already see (i.e. no extra popups) and that the cash is used to drop the cost and increase investment in Internet connections. I also think that whatever we want, someone will introduce targeted advertising through some channel. Google are 90% of the way there as they are able to track everything you Google for and can cross-reference that with any page that you visit that contains Adsense advertising (this page for example!!). If Google bring out an ISP service I'm sure that targeted advertising will be nestled in the terms and conditions.

Steam Locomotive

Just come across a great package on Ubuntu. sl stands for Steam Locomotive and if you type sl instead of ls you get an animated steam train flying across your screen.

Some people have too much time on their hands and long may it last!!

Package details can be found here:

Adverts..

I've added some adverts onto this page as an experiment to see how many clicks get generated. If you don't want to see the adverts, log in.

Going to start saving..

I dropped XAMPP on my Mac yesterday to do some offline dev work. It really highlighted the shortcomings of my 12" PowerBook G4. It's been a tireless workhorse over the last five years, being replaced once by a newer, swisher Intel Macbook Pro that lasted less than six months before I sold the new upstart and returned to the old faithful. It's great for running a web browser, a few terminal sessions and a mail client. But asking it to run Apache and mysql with PHP running on top is proving too much. It's taking about a minute to render a local copy of this blog!

Here's why the G4 is great! http://garan.org/why-macs-are-great (from November last year)

So it's time to start thinking about a replacement. Macrumors.com is anticipating a September release of Macbook and Macbook Pro upgrades. I don't need the power of the Macbook Pro range but the aluminium case on this model has seen a lot of bumps and scratches without a hiccup, most recently being bounced off a shelf in the garage onto the concrete floor! So the rumors of an aluminium case for the lower end Macbook along with investment bankers anticipating that Apple will lower prices to maintain their market edge. Glass trackpads that will give iPhone'esque gesture controls are another possibility so I'm going to start saving!! :D

Fiddling with layout..

I've been playing about with Drupal themes to see where I can drop ads. The colours leave a lot to be desired but I think that the layout is better. Will see what it looks like on a few different screens as I've only got my 12" Powerbook screen where I'm sat..

Custom Service Spam Email

The UPS emails I mentioned last week have now become 'Custom Service' emails. Again do not open as they contain a trojan zip file.

UPS Tracking Number Emails - SPAM!

Beware of emails coming through with the subject line 'UPS Tracking Number 56429599222' or similar. They are junk emails with zip files containing trojan viruses. The latest version of Avast identifies it as a trojan.

Ubuntu Debian Firewall Script by Arno

Over the last couple of years I've been fiddling with various ways of NAT'ing my internet connection at home. I've tried little firewall/router boxes from the likes of Netgear, Linksys and Thompson but I've always gone back to running iptables on my linux server so that I can firstly have more control and secondly, easily manage the firewall remotely.

Over the years I've crafted a set of iptables rules that I use and that work well for me but there's always some headscratching when I fiddle with the NAT'ing side of things as it seems to be something that my brain has decided how it works isn't important enough to retain!

About a week ago I had a disk go in my linux server. smartmon was reporting that the disk was running at 160 degrees centigrade so I'm not surprised it had given up the ghost! So after double checking the backups were all in place I pulled out all the various disks that I'd JBOD'd together and replaced them with a pair of hardware RAID mirrored Western Digital Caviar Green SATA disks. I went for the 750GB models rather than the 1TB disks as there's still quite a premium between the two.

Instead of rolling my own iptables script I thought I'd have a nose around and see what people other people are using. I came across a couple of HOWTOs on the Ubuntu forums but to be honest the scripts weren't that much better than what I already had. I was looking for something that would improve my situation rather than replace my problems with a new set!

That's when I came across the arno-iptables-firewall package. I installed it and ran through the debconf questions thinking 'ooo this is easy'. Tried a ping out from my desktop and.. bah. Didn't work. So I tried a
dpkg-reconfigure -plow arno-iptables-firewall to see if there were debconf questions hidden below the normal threshold. It gave me a couple more questions including a couple about NAT. A quick restart of the firewall and bish bash bosh! It's all done!

More information on Arno's Firewall Scripts can be found here.

I'm being persecuted!

I've been to Tesco and Boots over the last couple of weeks and so far I've been given four till vouchers for money off haircair products... I don't have any hair!!! I know I don't and I don't need anyone to remind me!!!!

:o)

A mention in The Telegraph

My Sis spotted my name in a Daily Telegraph article:

Looks like a quote straight from my blog.. :)

Maybe I should actually listen to birdsong at some point...
