Macbook Air

Even Terry Wogan knew about the new Apple Macbook Air, mentioning it by name on yesterday morning's Wake Up With Wogan! What a great piece of marketing Apple!

It doesn't stop there.. The spec of the box is lower than the entry level MacBook which is half the price, or a third of the price if you don't the flash memory based version.

So do I want one? Well if you're feeling extremely generous then feel free to visit the Mac Store and pop one in the post to me, oh and make it the more expensive flash based version. But to be honest I don't want one. I'm quite happy with my bullet proof 13" Power Book so I'm going to stick with it until it stops... or I win the lottery. Ha ha.

My mate David pointed me at the Airmail laptop sleeve. At first I thought they were taking the mick but then I read the blurb and it's a vinyl, fleece lined affair. Genius! I think that they're selling it cheap though - someone who's willing to drop $2k on a low spec but sexy looking laptop would pay more than $30!

Why Mac's are great..

Yesterday morning I reached for my faithful Mac PowerBook G4. The night before I'd put on the latest patch sets and rather than reboot I simply powered the laptop off. Powering it back on seemed to take forever, which in reality was probably about three or four minutes. It made me realise how much time I save each and every time I simply open the lid, type in my password and away I go. The PowerBook on standby will last four or five days without use which all the PC laptops I've ever used won't do, forcing me to use the sometimes flakey XP hibernate function. But the future may be grim as my recent short lived upgrade to a MacBookPro highlighted. The MBP didn't have anywhere near the standby capacity of the old model, lasting 24 hours without mains power before it ran out of juice. That on top of the heavy MBP power supply (I know I'm being picky but I have to carry the thing!), large footprint and the heat generated on my lap during use mean that I'm not missing it. To be honest I'm blissfully happy with my faithful old PowerBook. Long may it last.

Little Apples

I've just been reading this article on AppleInsider.com about rumour of an Apple sub-notebook. As a 12" Apple G4 Powerbook user I've been looking at the current Apple range of dual-core Intels thinking that the 15" machine just isn't portable enough for what I want. Maybe now something from Apple may replace the Sony SZ carbon fibre wrapped laptop at the top of my broken laptop/win the lottery wishlist.
