Just gotton back from a weekend in Belgium with my Dad. We went to see the Menin Gate in Ypres where my great grandfather’s name is listed alongside 54,325 other names of soldiers whose graves are unknown. My great grandfather served in the Monmouthshire Regiment as a miner. His job we assume would have been to dig tunnels for underground communications on the allied side and sabotage on the German side. A visit to the museum in Ypres gave me an insight into the conditions and I don’t think I could have handled it.
